  • Shoulder dislocation: This occurs when the ball of the humerus comes out of the socket in the shoulder blade. Shoulder dislocations can be caused by a direct blow to the shoulder, a fall, or a sudden twisting motion.  There is a great need to prevent these type of injuries.
  • Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) separation: This occurs when the ligaments that connect the acromion  to the clavicle are torn.
  • Rotator cuff injury: Rotator cuff injuries can range from tendinitis (inflammation of the tendons) to a complete tear. These injuries are often caused by repetitive overhead motions, such as throwing a baseball or swimming.
  • Labral tear: The labrum is a ring of cartilage that helps to seal the shoulder joint. Labral tears can be caused by a direct blow to the shoulder, a fall, or a sudden twisting motion.
  • Biceps tendonitis: The biceps tendon is a tendon that connects the biceps muscle to the shoulder joint. Biceps tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendon that can be caused by repetitive overhead motions or a direct blow to the shoulder.
  • Fracture: A fracture is a break in a bone. A direct blow to the shoulder, a fall, or a sudden twisting motion causes shoulder fractures.

Symptoms of Sports-Related Shoulder Injuries

The symptoms of sports-related shoulder injuries can vary depending on the type of injury. However, some common symptoms include:

  • Pain: The most common symptom of a sports-related shoulder injury is pain. The pain may be sharp, dull, or aching.
  • Swelling: Swelling is another common symptom of a sports-related shoulder injury. The swelling may be mild or severe.
