What is Polydactyly?

Polydactyly is a congenital disorder characterize by the presence of extra fingers or toes. The extra digits can be fully form or rudimentary and they can be locate on any part of the hand or foot. It is the most common congenital hand anomaly, affecting about 1 in 500 people.

Causes of Polydactyly

The exact cause is unknown, but it is thought to be cause by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Some genes have been linked to it, but the exact role of these genes is not fully understand. Environmental factors that may contribute include exposure to certain chemicals or medications during pregnancy.

Types of Polydactyly

There are two main types: preaxial polydactyly and postaxial polydactyly. Preaxial occurs when the extra digit is located on the thumb side of the hand or foot. Postaxial occurs when the extra digit is located on the pinky side of the hand or foot.

Symptoms

The symptoms of polydactyly vary depending on the severity of the condition. In mild cases, the extra digit may be small and non-functional. In more severe cases, the extra digit may be fully form and functional. Some cases, the extra digit may be attaches to the main digit by a thin piece of skin.

Diagnosis of Polydactyly

It is usually diagnose at birth or shortly after. The diagnosis is make by a physical examination. In some cases, imaging tests such as an X-ray or ultrasound may be use to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment

The treatment for polydactyly depends on the severity of the condition. In mild cases, the extra digit may be left untreated. In more severe cases the extra digit may be surgically remove. The surgery is usually perform when the child is an infant.

Complications

The complications are rare. However, in some cases, the extra digit can cause problems such as pain, difficulty with activities of daily living or infection.

Prognosis

The prognosis for polydactyly is excellent. The surgery to remove the extra digit is usually successful and the child can expect to have a normal life.
